Ossining MATTERS, Inc. is proud to have funded grants in every building in our district, supporting a wide range of enriching opportunities. Following are the programs, projects, and purchases your contributions have helped us bring to Ossining’s students:
At the Pre-School Level:
-“Muzzy” books on tape & videos for English Language Learners
-New books for the “1,000 Books Project”
-Digital camera & memory card
-Music library & rhythm instruments
-Carts stocked with science experiments
For Kindergarten and Early Eelementary Grades:
-“Jump Start” before-school literacy program for at-risk students
-Project PALS literacy-strengthening workshops for families
-“Fun Tunnel” playground equipment
-Books on tape for ESL students, recorded by OHS students
-Contributions to Project Tremors (formerly Formula for Success)
-Signs to reinforce the Fit Kids nutrition program for grades K-8
-Art of Storytelling multicultural residency
-Pilot chess at recess program
-Workshops with a naturalist, & books for a related research project
-Workshops in the art of bookbinding
-Jacob Burns “See Hear Feel Film” program for classes & teachers
-Roller skates & rollerblades to help new & special-needs skaters in p.e.
-World percussion set for a pull-out program
-Books & books on tape for a before-school program for English Language Learners
-Chess program during recess, taught by a professional chess instructor
-Funding for the continuation of the collaborative SPLASH science program
-Contributions to the Family Reading Connection
-Discover Dinosaurs and Fossils workshops
-Garden Creators nature and poetry project
-Curriculum Based Language Workshops for Spanish Speaking Parents, assisting parents in understanding their children’s curriculum and enhancing their ability to help with homework
For Third, Fourth and Fifth Grades:
-Instruction in dances from around the world, for all 4th graders, by a professional dance teacher
-Jazz workshops with WJO
-Storytelling workshops and residency
-Colonial Day events for all 4th graders
-Three years of the very successful Writemind writing workshop series
-New shed to store gardening tools & bird food for a special program
-Microscopes & a micro-projector
-Dance Dance Revolution equipment for 4th-12th graders

-Kids Make Books for Kids
-Claremont Girls’ Running Club
-School of Rock guitar classes
-Sound system for assemblies/class productions
-Music in History, History in Music, a program in which 175 Claremont students will each build a m’bira (a thumb piano) under the direction of an Artist in Residence, who will teach the students about the music and the instrument, and its place in African and American music.
-Chess at Claremont
-Support for the Ossining DARE program.
-Roosevelt Art Enrichment, in which the entire fifth grade will work together to create new, age-appropriate mural and mosaic art for their new school building
At AMD Middle School:
-Staff development program in math & science for K-8 teachers
-Books for independent reading for 7th-grade classrooms
-Percussion workshops with a professional in African drumming
-Colonial American Trunk with artifacts, books, & more, for all 7th graders
-Games & materials to aid math instruction for AIS students
-Contributions to “High Hopes and Expectations” for African-American 6th- & -7th-grade boys
-One-time donation to support the Whale Watch trip for all 6th graders
-Library of recordings & sound system for an active music-listening program
-Math- & science-related literature for a math classroom
-Projector to aid calculator instruction for math students
-Creative math & ELA interdisciplinary trip, tying together geometric concepts, observation of sculptures, & poetry
-Elliptical machine for the fitness center
-Math-casting program to reinforce math concepts for students who must miss class

At Ossining High School:
-Equipment for the firefighting p.e. elective
-Ballroom & multicultural dance program, taught by professional dancers
-Writing workshops for Latino students, with a professional writer
-Teleprompter for use by GO-TV, plus AMD & OHS video clubs
-Pilot program using disposable cameras to allow special education students to -take photographs for creative inspiration in writing
-Books for Global History reading groups in the 9th Grade Academy
-Electronic display board for news about science research & student awards
-6 pieces of equipment for the fitness center
-Workshops for Gimme the Mic students, with musician Daniel Bernard Roumain
-Digital camera for the student newspaper
-Video library for the 9th-grade Living Environment (biology) course
-Camera & equipment for photography classes
-Contribution toward new lighting system for the auditorium
-iPods and recorded books for English instruction
-African drums for the African-American club
-Latina Power workshops
-LCD projector for all special needs classes
-Expansion of a library of books & videos relating to the African-American experience
-Contributions to “Project Earthquake”
-Contributions to the Guidance Discretionary Fund, which helps students in need with money for college-level courses, test prep, and college applications
-Performance-level piano for the auditorium
-The Art of Murals, in which 25 OHS students worked together with two teachers to create murals at the high school.
-Stipend to assist two students with the expenses of attending a summer program, which will provide the training necessary to produce the new OHS yearbook digitally
-
A dimmer board and a lighting console to significantly upgrade the lighting in the OHS auditorium, used by performing arts groups from all schools in the district
