In our first four years, Ossining MATTERS, Inc. is very proud
to have funded grants in every building in our district,
supporting a tremendous range of enriching opportunities.

At Roosevelt School:

  • “Muzzy” books on tape & videos for English Language Learners
  • New books for the “1,000 Books Project”
  • Digital camera & memory card
  • Music library & rhythm instruments
  • Carts stocked with science experiments for students

At Park School:

  • "Jump Start” before-school literacy program for at-risk students
  • Project PALS literacy-strengthening workshops for families
  • “Fun Tunnel” playground equipment
  • Books on tape for ESL students, recorded by OHS students
  • Enriching Saturday trips for selected African American & Latino boys
  • Signs to reinforce the Fit Kids nutrition program for grades K-8

At Brookside:

  • Workshops with a naturalist, & books for a related research project
  • Workshops in the art of bookbinding
  • Jacob Burns “See Hear Feel Film” program for classes & teachers
  • Roller skates & rollerblades to help new & special-needs skaters in p.e.
  • Set of world percussion drums for a pull-out program
  • Books & books on tape for a before-school program for English Language Learners
  • Chess program during recess, taught by a professional chess instructor

At Claremont School:

  • Instruction in dances from around the world, for all 4th-graders, by a professional dance teacher
  • Jazz workshops with WJO
  • Storytelling workshops & residency
  • Colonial Day events for all 4th graders
  • Three years of the very successful Writemind writing workshop series
  • New shed to store gardening tools & bird food for a special program
  • Microscopes & a micro-projector


At AMD Middle School:

  • Staff development program in Math & Science for K – 8 teachers
  • Books for independent reading for 7th-grade classrooms
  • Percussion workshops with a professional in African drumming
  • Colonial American Trunk with artifacts, books, & more, for all 7th-graders
  • Games & materials to aid math instruction for AIS students
  • Contribution to “High Hopes & Expectations,” for African American 6th- & 7th-grade boys
  • One-time donation to support to the Whale Watch trip for all 6 th-graders
  • Library of recordings & sound system for an active music-listening program
  • Math- & science-related literature for a math classroom
  • Projector to aid calculator instruction for Math A students
  • Creative math & ELA interdisciplinary trip, tying together geometric concepts, observation of sculptures & poetry
  • Elliptical machine to support the expansion of a fitness center

At Ossining High School

  • Helmets & pants for the firefighting p.e. elective
  • Ballroom & multicultural dance program, taught by professional dancers
  • Writing workshops for Latino students, with a professional writer
  • Teleprompter for use by GO-TV, plus AMD & OHS video clubs
  • Pilot program using disposable cameras to allow special education students to take photographs for creative inspiration in writing
  • Books for Global History reading groups in the 9th Grade Academy
  • Electronic display board for news about science research & student awards
  • Renovation converting the weight room into a fitness center, beginning with 6 pieces of equipment
  • Workshops for Gimme the Mic students with musician Daniel Bernard Roumain
  • Digital camera for the student newspaper
  • New video library for the 9th-grade Living Environment (Biology) course
  • New camera & equipment for photography classes
  • Contribution toward new lighting system for the auditorium
  • iPods & recorded books for English instruction
  • African drums for the African American club
  • Latina Power workshops for sophomore & junior Latina girls
  • New LCD projector for all special needs classes
  • Expansion of a library of fiction, nonfiction, & videos relating to the African-American experience

Throughout the district, you can find programs, equipment, pilot projects, and most important, students and teachers whose learning experiences have been enlarged, enriched, and enlightened thanks to Ossining MATTERS, Inc. With your help, we will continue our mission to make Ossining’s great schools even stronger.
