Welcoming the Drums
Kazi Oliver, a percussionist specializing in African music, brought his young students, performing troupe and dancers to the OHS stage in celebration of Black History Month. During the program, the OHS African-American Club, advised by John Grady, acknowledged the gift from Ossining MATTERS Education Foundation of six authentic African drums, handmade by Kazi Oliver, to the school district. Kazi introduced the new drums to the audience, and explained how they were made and how they are used. (The drums purchased by Ossining MATTERS are shown in the photos with Kazi, Cindy Winter, Adrienne Gruskin, John Grady, and young friends). Kazi Oliver will be conducting African percussion workshops with AMD students this spring, another project funded by Ossining MATTERS.
